Madras Lentils


Let’s take a trip to the more eastern side of the world! We’re having MADRAS LENTILS!! Time to travel to India!

  • Lentils (1 cup)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1 tbsp of oil
  • 1/4 tsp of garam masks
  • 2/4 tsp of cumin
  • 1/4 black pepper



  1. Rinse the 1 cup of Lentils off with water. Making sure your lentils are nice and clean of any bacteria! Then drain the water from the the lentils.
  2. Boil 2 cups of water with 1/4 of salt then add lentils (turning the heat to medium high). Boil for 7 minutes!
  3. Check if lentils are al-dente like you’re checking pasta because you don’t want mushy lentils. 
  4. Remove from burner and drain lentils with a colander or pot top!
  5. Chop onions into thin circles or half circles. (So you’re cutting vertically; cut onion in half then peel off skin and slice the halves of the onion.You’re not mincing or chopping.)
  6. Put a burner to medium heat then get a medium pan and add 1 tbsp oil to it. Wait for oil to heat up; to check grab some water and splash a little at the oil.
  7. Add onions to the pan and cook until the caramelize/brown and then season them with salt (to your taste),pepper, and cumin.
  8. While you’re waiting cook something to add to the dish. Such as rice or vegetables!
  9. Add lentils into pan with onions and add a little water. 
  10. Add 1/4 of garam masala and let it simmer for a bit(5 minutes).
  11. Then you’re Done!
